The counter seating at Woodside Pizza in Woodside, New York

Getting here

Four minutes' walk from 61st Street–Woodside on the 7, and from the Long Island Rail Road platform directly above it. The Q18, Q32, Q53 and Q70 all stop within two blocks.

Parking

There is metered street parking on 61st Street and free two-hour parking on the residential blocks east of it after 7pm. There is no lot, and the kerb outside the shop is a bus stop — please do not wait in it.

The room

Twenty-eight seats across eight tables and six at the counter. No reservations, first come. The two counter seats nearest the oven are the best in the shop and everybody knows it.

What it is like inside

One room, and the oven is in it. That is the whole design: you can see the fire from most of the tables, and the two seats at the end of the counter are close enough to watch a pizza turned. Nobody planned that as an attraction; it is simply where the oven had to go in 1994 and it turned out to be the best thing about the room.

It is loud at seven o'clock on a Friday and quiet at three on a Tuesday. There are high chairs, there is a step at the door we would like to fix and have not yet, and the lavatory is at the back past the kitchen. The accessibility page is honest about what that means for a wheelchair, because it is not good enough and we are not going to describe it as though it were.

Come in

Twenty-eight seats, first come. It is busiest between six and eight on Friday and Saturday and calm most afternoons. If you want the counter seats by the oven, come early or be lucky.
